Regeneration plans ahead for Portrush - 15/01/2010

Representatives of businesses in Portrush were presented with an update of the plans to regenerate the resort at a meeting hosted by the Coleraine Borough Chamber of Commerce in Portrush Town Hall on 6th January.

A review of the 2009 season was presented and event plans for 2010 were discussed, with representatives advising which events had a positive impact on their business.

Council’s newly appointed Regeneration Manager, Mr Alan Jeffers, outlined the objectives and corresponding projects being pursued in delivering the Portrush Regeneration Strategy. He emphasised the strategic importance of Portrush to the Northern Ireland economy as a key economic node within the Causeway Coast and Glen’s area. Mr Jeffers also outlined Council’s role in seeking delivery of comprehensive physical and economic regeneration through the Portrush Regeneration Strategy and emphasised the requirement for public sector’s support. The implementation strategy is underway and will accelerate as further inward investment is attracted to Portrush.

Ms Moira Mann, Head of Development Services from Coleraine Borough Council summarised proposed marketing activities for the 2010 season both directly and at a regional level through their linkages with Causeway Coast & Glens regional tourism partnership and Tourism Ireland.

Peter Thompson, Coleraine Borough Council’s Tourism Manager updated those present on the plans for the £1,100,000 scheme for environmental improvements for the promenade at the East Strand / Bath Street area that is due to commence and advised that it was currently out to tender with anticipated completion by the end of 2010

Karen Yates, President of the Borough Chamber presented on the Chamber’s structure and their role within Portrush and then handed over to Mr Ian Donaghey, to chair the following question and answer session during which a number of issues were raised and responded to.

The President of the Chamber, Mrs Karen Yates concluded by thanking the representatives of the Borough Council for their interesting and informative presentations and thanked the many representatives of the businesses that attended, especially in the adverse weather conditions.
